Internships

Internships occur in three cycles each year, and begin in September, January, and May.  While we will consider applications for the next cycle on a rolling basis, we encourage you to apply at least one month in advance of your desired starting month.

Civil Rights & Policy Internship

Supports KARAMAH's Civil Rights Division

KARAMAH seeks an intern to support our civil rights division. The intern will report to our Executive Director to support research, fact-checking, data gathering, and policy development.

KARAMAH seeks undergraduate/and or graduate student interns for the fall, spring and summer semesters. KARAMAH collects, disseminates, applies, and produces scholarship and research on Islamic jurisprudence. 

Communications Internship

Supports KARAMAH'S Communications Team

This is an ideal opportunity for a mature undergraduate or graduate student to gain meaningful experience at a DC-based NGO as well as exposure to the fields of Women’s Rights, Civil Rights, Islamic law, and leadership development. 

Civil Rights & Policy Internship

KARAMAH seeks an intern to support our civil rights division. The intern will report to our Executive Director to support research, fact-checking, data gathering, and policy development.  The ideal candidate is pursuing a career in public policy, advocacy, or the law. Writing and publishing experience preferred but not required. A passion for human rights, gender equity, and religious freedom is preferred and required. Undergraduate/Graduate Internship

KARAMAH seeks undergraduate/and or graduate student interns for the fall, spring and summer semesters. Internship positions are typically unpaid; however, students may earn credit hours from their respective law schools or seek fellowships to fund their work with KARAMAH. College students who are available to volunteer 12 to 15 hours or more per week during the academic year, or a minimum of 30 hours during the summer, are eligible to apply. Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis. Our internship program is designed to give interns full access to the academic, creative, and administrative operations at KARAMAH.  Interns will have the opportunity to be involved in every department of our organization, gaining valuable experience and skills in program development and execution, research development, communications, women’s rights, civil rights, and operations of a non-profit.

Intern Duties and Responsibilities

KARAMAH collects, disseminates, applies, and produces scholarship and research on Islamic jurisprudence. Interns will have opportunities to see examples of the practical application of Islamic jurisprudence, assist with research, write web articles, and current event reports. Interns may also assist in planning and executing educational programs, including topics, creating program documents and hand-outs, advertising, digital and video media work, and program administration. Promotion of these events is extremely important, and interns may be asked to aide in managing the website, media, social media outreach, events, and the development of marketing materials and presentations. KARAMAH interns will also attend and prepare materials for international delegations, attend networking events, and have opportunities to plan and attend lectures by distinguished scholars and leaders. This is an ideal opportunity for a mature undergraduate or graduate student to gain meaningful experience at a DC-based NGO as well as exposure to the fields of Women’s Rights, Civil Rights, Islamic law, and leadership development.

Qualifications:

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated work style with high attention to detail
  • Ability to work well in groups and on short deadlines
  • Interest in Islamic Studies, Human rights, Women’s Rights, Civil Rights, and/or Comparative Law
  • Event planning experience
  • Non-profit experience
  • Social media/communications experience (preferred)
  • Arabic language skills are preferred but not required

Intern Duties and Responsibilities

This is an ideal opportunity for a mature undergraduate or graduate student to gain meaningful experience at a DC-based NGO as well as exposure to the fields of Women’s Rights, Civil Rights, Islamic law, and leadership development. The Communications intern will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, which may include:

  • Assisting in writing press releases, media advisories, stories for the KARAMAH website and other publications.
  • Assisting with logistics for press conferences
  • Building and expanding media databases
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of social media strategy
  •  Posting to social media

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program, preferably in communications, political science, international relations or a related field
  • Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, research, and writing skills
  • Experience or classwork in communications, marketing, or journalism a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Arabic translation experience highly desired
  • Graphic design experience and/or ability to make social graphics is a plus
  • Working knowledge of primary social media platforms
