Press Release: “Muslims and Sikhs Stand in Solidarity Against Hate and Violence”

MUSLIMS & SIKHS STAND IN SOLIDARITY AGAINST HATE & VIOLENCE
14+ DC Based Muslim Organizations Stand with Sikhs, Pledge Solidarity

“After the tragic shooting at a Sikh Gurudwara in Wisconsin on August 5th, and now with violence erupting across the Muslim World, hate violence is a concern everywhere. The Muslim community recognizes this, and is holding an exciting event to display this solidarity and build connections between the Muslim and Sikh community. A highlight of the event will be the signing of a Pledge of Solidarity on behalf of 14+ Muslim organizations, and presented to Sikh leaders present.

Speakers include Ms. Aisha Rahman, Executive Director of KARAMAH, Dr. Amarjit Singh, Director of Khalistan Affairs Center, and Haris Tarin, Director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council. The event will be held at America’s Islamic Heritage Museum, 2315 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE, Washington, DC 20020 beginning at 7:30pm on Saturday, September 22nd, 2012.

The event will highlight Sikh-Muslim partnership and mutual solidarity. This will be displayed through elements of both Sikh and Muslim spirituality, including scripture readings, a traditional Sikh langar-style meal, with Sikh devotional gurbani kirtan music.

Hosted and organized by the Muslim community, and joined by Sikhs and interfaith partners across the greater DC area, the message of communal solidarity, as well as solidarity in the face of hate violence that both communities have experienced, will be emphatically stated.”
