United Nations, Committee on Status of Women – Using Religious Text and Tradition for Muslim Women

Executive Director Rahmah A. Abdulaleem, Esq. moderated a discussion on how patriarchy and cultural traditions would have you believe that the Islamic texts and the prophetic example are oppressive and harsh to Muslim women. The panelists including Vice President Abed Awad discussed the misinterpretation vs. gender equitable interpretation of the Quran and prophetic example. Panelists highlighted the fact the Quran came and “liberated” women giving them equality rights long before the “West.” Panelists discussed how KARAMAH educates and empowers Muslim women to become strong leaders within their communities in the movement for gender equality.
