Summer Program

The Law and Leadership Summer Program (LLSP) aims to educate Muslim women about gender-equitable principles valued in Islam from a legal perspective. LLSP provides practical avenues for the development of Muslim women’s leadership. The program is tailored to support professional and personal growth and to help women achieve positive change in their communities within their own religious and cultural contexts.

Founded in 2002, the Law and Leadership Summer Program brings together a select group of Muslim women from around the world to study law, leadership and conflict resolution from an Islamic perspective. Advanced courses in Islamic law focus on family law, Sharia (the interpretation of the Islamic law), women’s rights and comparative international law. Additionally, participants partake in interactive trainings in leadership and conflict resolution and develop strategies for applying their new knowledge of Islamic law to real-life situations. Women leave the workshop not only with an advanced understanding of Islamic law but also with the leadership and interpersonal skills needed to put that knowledge to use.

The Law and Leadership Summer Program cultivates a global network of leaders at the forefront of a grassroots movement devoted to advancing the rights of Muslim women. LLSP alumni share ideas, expertise and knowledge to collectively improve their lives and their communities.

Our distinguished “Bureau of Speakers” enhances and refines our program. Workshops are conducted with professors, leaders and dignitaries from institutions such as:

  • Harvard Law School
  • The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania
  • The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL)
  • The University of Virginia School of Law
  • The Elon School of Law
  • The University of Richmond School of Law
  • The University for Peace, Costa Rica

See Topics and Speakers from LLSP 2008 and 2009.
