KARAMAH in the Philippines!

From March 5 through March 16, 2018, Karamah presented its Law, Leadership and Conflict Resolution Institute at Miriam College in Quezon City, Philippines. We had 37 participants most of whom were from the Philippines. We also had participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Singapore. Dr. al-Hibri, Imam Magid, and Dr. Alwani presented various lectures on Islamic Jurisprudence. Professor Amr Abdalla conducted a three-day workshop on Conflict Resolution. Our Interim Executive Director presented the Leadership lectures.

In addition to the Institute, we conducted a one day Imams’ conference that was attended by over 100 Imams from throughout the Philippines. During our time in the Philippines, we also participated in several parallel events outside of the Institute. Dr. al-Hibri was interviewed for television and print media about Karamah’s trailblazing work. We also participated in a roundtable discussion regarding the justice system and Muslim communities in the Philippines; met with civil leaders; gave a keynote address on Muslim women’s civic engagement at the Commission on Elections; participated in roundtable discussion with family court judges; presented a half-day workshop at the University of the Philippines Law School; facilitated a cultural competency training to legal service providers for domestic violence survivors; presented to US Embassy officials on engagement with Muslim communities; and conducted a session on leadership with Muslim youth university leaders.
