On Feb. 3, 2012 KARAMAH\u2019s Vice President, Engy Abdelkader, gave the keynote address to The Connecticut Public Interest Law Journal\u2019s spring symposium, entitled One Nation Under Law: Exploring How the Law Shapes the Muslim American Experience, held at the University of Connecticut School of Law. In addition to Ms. Abdelkader, this symposium also featured prominent Muslim scholars and legal leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her speech, Ms. Abdelkader spoke about the recent movement by many states to outlaw the consideration of Islamic law in courts. Ms. Abdelkader presented both the constitutional problems with such laws, as well as the impact of such laws on Muslim-Americans. Ms. Abdelkader showed how such laws hinder the free practice of religion for many Muslims, complicate common legal proceedings such as marriage contracts and drafting of wills, and lead to violations of Muslim\u2019s civil rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
