{"id":970,"date":"2020-03-25T02:11:22","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T02:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/karamah.org\/?p=970"},"modified":"2020-06-05T16:14:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-05T16:14:00","slug":"debunking-the-myth-that-islam-requires-fgm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/karamah.org\/ar\/debunking-the-myth-that-islam-requires-fgm\/","title":{"rendered":"Debunking the Myth that Islam Requires FGM"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Dr. Azizah al-Hibri,\u00a0Ghada Ghazal, and Aljawharah Alassaf<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>KARAMAH\u00a0February\u00a02018<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PAPER ABSTRACT<br> In the case of female\u00a0<em>khitan\u00a0<\/em>(FGM), proponents of this practice rely on (a) a single verse in the Qur\u2019an and (b) a number of\u00a0<em>hadiths<\/em>\u00a0attributed to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him).\u00a0 This study will show that the cited Qur\u2019anic verse is inapplicable to the issue at hand and that the variously quoted\u00a0<em>hadiths\u00a0<\/em>are either unreliable or do not establish the desired result.\u00a0 Furthermore, we shall establish that there is neither a valid reasoning by analogy nor consensus that would mandate female\u00a0<em>khitan<\/em>.\u00a0These facts together suffice to reject the argument that female\u00a0<em>khitan<\/em>\u00a0is required in Islam.\u00a0However, our conclusion is further bolstered by the Islamic worldview and the basic principles of Islamic ethics.\u00a0 These are clearly articulated in the Qur\u2019an and\u00a0<em>hadith<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By adopting this comprehensive approach, we signal our refusal to view the issue of female&nbsp;<em>khitan<\/em>&nbsp;as an isolated issue unrelated to the overall Islamic architecture of human rights and gender relations.&nbsp;
