I have been shielded from this awareness for most of my adult life by thick layers of subconscious denial. The interesting antecedent question thus becomes: ‘Why did I feel the need to deny, to shield myself from a recognition of the relationship between my faith and my profession?’ Upon reflection, the puzzling answer I settle upon is: ‘Because I am trying to be a good American Muslim.'”
