It is with great pleasure and pride that we announce to you that the PBS documentary “Gender Equality in Islam” featuring KARAMAH won two awards this month (September 2015): the Accolade Global Film Competition Award of Excellence and Women in Film & Television Atlanta (“WIFTA”) Best Short Film Documentary!!!
“Gender Equality in Islam,” first aired last April on PBS as a special episode of the show “To the Contrary.” The documentary covered KARAMAH’s work in the US and globally. KARAMAH scholars from around the globe were interviewed about our vision: that we live in a world in which all human beings, regardless of gender or other differences, enjoy their God-given right of dignity. KARAMAH believes that through education, women will be empowered to transform culture-based misinterpretations of women’s status in Islam for the betterment of themselves and their communities.
On September 14th, 2015, WIFTA hosted a short film showcase where “Gender Equality in Islam” was watched by an enthusiastic audience who found it both inspiring and eye opening. The documentary is of the highest caliber with excellent writing, production and content and we are proud that KARAMAH was part of it. “Gender Equality in Islam” was directed by Bonnie Erbé, written by Karen Ryan, produced by Cari Weiss Stein, and shot by Todd Nash. Many congratulations to Bonnie Erbé and her team on these well deserved awards. Watch the documentary here.
