Caitlin is a rising senior at the University of Richmond, where she is a double major in Leadership and American Studies. After learning Modern Standard Arabic for two years at Richmond, Caitlin studied abroad this past fall in Rabat, Morocco with a program that focused on journalism and media. Her experience in Morocco led her to become more passionate about women’s rights, leadership, and education around the world- which then led her to KARAMAH for her summer internship. This summer, Caitlin hopes to learn more about American and Islamic laws regarding women’s rights, and is excited to be involved in organizing KARAMAH’s Law and Leadership Summer Program.
Akua is a 3rd Year law student at John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, Georgia. Akua is joining KARAMAH through The Fund for American Studies: Legal Studies Institute in Washington D.C. This summer, Akua will be working closely with KARAMAH’s Family Law Staff Attorney, where she hopes to improve her legal writing and research skills, and gain a better knowledge of how to be an effective advocate for those in need of legal service.
Eman is an undergraduate student at Mount Holyoke College studying Economics and Middle Eastern Studies. After college Eman is considering working in the field of international development. She is entertaining several venues: the Peace Corps, Foreign Service and NGO’s doing public diplomacy work. Eman joined KARAMAH to learn more about the workings of a non-profit organization, specifically one working with the Muslim community and she is looking forward to using the knowledge and experience she acquires here in her prospective career.
Taryn is a senior student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver Canada where she is studying International Relations. Taryn is interested in pursuing a career in international humanitarian law, focusing on civil rights and liberties, and this is what brought her to KARAMAH. Taryn hopes to gain experience in civil rights policy reform and family law.
Lorentz is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics from the University of Chicago. After learning Spanish, as well as some French and Italian in high school, she started Arabic at university, and plans to continue with Arabic as well as start Basque in the fall. Lorentz is interested in the intersection between language, gender, and society, and hopes to gain a better understanding of Arab and Muslim culture and society from a women’s perspectives while at KARAMAH. Lorentz is also interested in attending law school and hopes to learn more about Civil Rights and Islamic Law while at KARAMAH.
Areeba is a senior at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where she is studying Political Science, Economics and Arab/Muslim American Studies. She is interested in the intersection of Law and American Culture, specifically in the ways that law can stratify society and further enforce divisions along ethnic, religious and economic lines. At KARAMAH, Areeba hopes to learn more about practicing and researching law, civil and human rights advocacy and the workings of a non profit in order to develop the skills she will need in the future while working to create a more equal America.
