Empower with Education
KARAMAH’s multi-day workshops are intensive one to five-day programs designed for Muslim women leaders and provide a unique combination of education in Islamic law, leadership, and conflict resolution. Many workshops are designed to introduce participants, who are unable to attend our longer programs, to KARAMAH’s work on Islamic jurisprudence and to develop their leadership skills. Other workshops provide groups of participants interested in similar topics with advanced courses on a specific topic, or combination of topics, related to Islamic jurisprudence, leadership, and conflict resolution.
Lectures
All of KARAMAH’s instructors for Islamic jurisprudence are active jurists; they currently study, teach, or practice law and are able to provide participants with insight on the latest research and activities in the field. Similarly, instructors for leadership and conflict resolution courses are active practitioners or scholars in those fields, providing education of the highest quality. Workshop instructors utilize two styles of educational methods – lectures and interactive sessions. In lectures, participants are introduced to new concepts and ideas in order to broaden their academic understanding of various topics. Through interactive sessions, participants are given opportunities to put the knowledge they have gained into practice through activities such as debates, advocacy simulations, team building, and leadership exercises. These complementary educational methods thoroughly prepare participants to speak eloquently and effectively on Islamic Law and to advocate for their rights with a wealth of tools and skills.
KARAMAH conducts workshops in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and North Africa, and occasionally works with local partners to provide workshops for specific groups. Additionally, workshops are flexible in length, and often take place over the weekend to accommodate professionals and others unable to attend on the weekdays.
KARAMAH in the Philippines!
From March 5 through March 16, 2018, Karamah presented its Law, Leadership and Conflict Resolution Institute at Miriam College in Quezon City, Philippines. We had 37 participants most of whom were from the Philippines. We also had participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Singapore. Dr. al-Hibri, Imam Magid, and Dr. Alwani presented various lectures on Islamic Jurisprudence. Professor Amr Abdalla conducted a three-day workshop on Conflict Resolution. Our Interim Executive Director presented the Leadership lectures.
In addition to the Institute, we conducted a one day Imams’ conference that was attended by over 100 Imams from throughout the Philippines. During our time in the Philippines, we also participated in several parallel events outside of the Institute. Dr. al-Hibri was interviewed for television and print media about Karamah’s trailblazing work.
We also participated in a roundtable discussion regarding the justice system and Muslim communities in the Philippines; met with civil leaders; gave a keynote address on Muslim women’s civic engagement at the Commission on Elections; participated in roundtable discussion with family court judges; presented a half-day workshop at the University of the Philippines Law School; facilitated a cultural competency training to legal service providers for domestic violence survivors; presented to US Embassy officials on engagement with Muslim communities; and conducted a session on leadership with Muslim youth university leaders.
“Say Peace” Because No One Wakes up Thinking S/He is The Bad Guy
On August 15-16, 2015, KARAMAH collaborated with Ikram: Foundation for Empowerment of Muslim Women to present the two-day Skill-Building and Intervention Skills Training Workshop “Say Peace” which is one in a series of workshops organized under the banner: “Promoting Healthy Marriage and Preventing Divorce in our Communities.” The workshop was held at the Fairfax Institute and was presented by KARAMAH’s Senior Advisor on Conflict Resolution Dr. Amr Abdalla.
The workshop provided the participants with an understanding of the dynamics influencing conflicts within marriage in our communities and introduced them to strategies of conflict mapping and analysis and peaceful approaches to conflicts. Dr. Abdalla presented an approach based on Islamic principles and peace studies that helped participants develop skills for peacefully coping with conflicts within marriage and also intervene as a third party in marital conflicts.
Dr. Abdalla says: “No one wakes up in the morning thinking s/he is the bad guy” and “the basis of positive communication is maintaining concern for the other person along with concern for your own needs and interests. Whenever possible, instead of placing the other person as your adversary, you want to make them your partner in solving the problem you are facing.”
