On April 30, 2011, Dr. Azizah al-Hibri, Founder and Chair of Karamah, was invited by the President of Montpelier, Michael Quinn, to participate in a panel discussion with constitutional expert Professor Dick Howard of the University of Virginia Law School. The panel was entitled “Revolution and Constitution: From America’s Founding to the Middle East.” Montpelier is the historic home of James Madison and is a perfect site for revisiting the history of the American Revolution and the thought of the Founding Fathers. The goal of the program was to provide an historic perspective about the development of constitutional self-government in the U.S. to analize the changes underway in Tunisia, Egypt, and other countries in the Middle East. In this panel, Professor Dick Howard provided his perspective on American revolutionary thought, while Dr. al-Hibri provided her Islamic perspective that bridged the two bodies of thought, Islamic and American. Mr. Quinn acted as the moderator, and a lively discussion ensued.
