On the evening of August 28th, 2012, KARAMAH welcomed old friends and new faces to a film screening of the “The Light in Her Eyes.” This documentary featured the work of Houda al-Habash, a Syrian religious leader whose Qur’an school for women and girls in Damascus highlights women’s involvement in mosques. As the school was founded over thirty years ago, Houda and her daughter Iynas have dedicated their lives to promoting women’s leadership and religious education.
This film screening also marked a proud moment for KARAMAH, as Iynas is a graduate of KARAMAH’s Law and Leadership Summer Program (LLSP), which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. Following the movie, KARAMAH staff members facilitated an open discussion, encouraging attendees to share their thoughts and opinions on the film and message it conveyed.
The film showcased the kind of community leadership KARAMAH hopes to cultivate and support amongst all graduates of LLSP. Stay tuned for more about the many accomplishments of our LLSP alumnae in the future. For more on this and other KARAMAH events, please visit our website at www.karamah.org.
