In celebration of the month of Ramadan, KARAMAH held its 4th annual Iftar dinner on Thursday August 11th. The event was a great success, and guests included members of the Muslim community, embassy representatives, representatives of the U.S. Departments of State and Justice, and the Constitution Project. KARAMAH also welcomed Dr. Azizah al-Hibri’s colleagues from the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. The attendees had a chance to watch a documentary about KARAMAH ‘s Law and Leadership Summer Program (LLSP) featuring Dr. al-Hibri, Sister Aisha Adawiya, LLSP participants and instructors, and KARAMAH ‘s staff. The documentary highlighted the stories of two courageous LLSP participants who talked about the challenges they have faced as Muslim women and how LLSP provided them with the tools needed to face these challenges. Speakers at the event included Dr. Mohamed Abdelaziz Gadelhak Ibrahim, Judicial Affairs Officer at the U.N. who spoke about the current political situation in Sudan and Egypt and the effects of the “Arab Spring” there. Another speaker was Ms. Zahrah Devji, a summer 2011 intern, who spoke about her unique experience at KARAMAH and how important it was for her as a Muslim woman.
