Advocating for the religious freedom and human rights of all is a core aspect of KARAMAH’s work. Addressing post-9/11 prejudice and bullying of Muslim students in schools and universities specifically, KARAMAH’s Vice President, Ms. Engy Abdelkader, Esq. wrote to Special Counsel for Religious Discrimination in advance of the March federal interagency meeting at the Department of Justice. In her submission, Ms. Abdelkader illustrated KARAMAH’s concerns using examples of religious discrimination against Muslims in schools, universities and in everyday life. She proceeded to outline four considerations to help alleviate this issue in the classroom environment. As Ms. Abdelkader emphasized in the document, KARAMAH is ever-concerned about the damaging effects of discrimination on individuals and communities. By formulating plausible solutions and continued education initiatives, KARAMAH hopes to combat this problem in the most effective manner.
