My name is Wejdan Alharbi. I am a graduate student from Saudi Arabia with a Bachelor’s degree in Law and Political Science from King Saud University in the Saudi capital of Riyadh. After earning my first degree in 2012, I had a strong desire to continue my studies. Therefore, I applied to the scholarship program of late King Abdullah in the same year. My application was accepted and I moved to the United States of America within few months of my graduation. The scholarship program offered me a chance to work on my legal and academic English skills as a non-native speaker for a year. During that time, I applied to Washington School of Law located in the heart of law and politics of the U.S Washington DC and I was happy to be admitted in the fall of 2014.
I started attending Washington School of Law the fall of 2014 and currently I’m in the 3rd semester of my second degree and first semester of my third one. My second degree is a Masters of International Legal Studies specializing in international organizations. I am interested in law and government which is the program I started this semester. I will be graduating in the summer of 2016 with the two masters’ degrees stated above.
My journey with KARAMAH began in the summer of 2014 when I joined their Law and Leadership Summer program which I found to be enlightening and empowering. After that I was keen to keep in touch and attend as many of KARAMAH’s events as possible. Now as a legal intern I find KARAMAH to be the perfect fit for me as a ”Muslim woman lawyer caring to advance human rights” which matches KARAMAH’s title. KARAMAH provides the best environment imaginable for me since I find myself agreeing with their educational approach and work. It is not just like any other law firm because at KARAMAH, they really care about the community as a whole and not only for the ones suffering in a legal battle. It is perfect because I can educate myself legally and religiously by knowing my rights as a Muslim woman and gain experience at the same time.
Finally, I am exited to learn more during this externship to help better the understanding of the legal and religious status of Muslim women and hopefully carrying KARAMAH’s message across.
