Asma Afsaruddin is Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures at Indiana University, Bloomington. She is the author and editor of six books, including The First Muslims: History and Memory (2008); Excellence and Precedence: Medieval Islamic Discourse on Legitimate Leadership (2002); and Hermeneutics and Honor: Negotiating Female “Public” Space in Islamicate Societies (1999). She has also written numerous articles and essays on pluralism and moderation in Islamic thought, inter-faith relations, war and peace in Islam, and gender in scholarly and popular publications. Professor Afsaruddin is currently a senior editor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Women (2012), an advisor to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life for the project “Global Survey of Muslims,” and a member of the Shura Council of the Women’s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality. A recipient of grants from the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation, she is currently completing a manuscript on jihad and martyrdom in Islamic thought and practice, forthcoming from Oxford University Press.
