Dr.al-Hibri speaks about “Shari’ah, Liberty, and the Rule of Law” in Charlottesville

On November 10, 2011, Dr. Azizah al-Hibri spoke at the Charlottesville Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) on “Shari’ah, Liberty, and the Rule of Law”. Founded in 1951, the Charlottesville Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is a civic, non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting informed discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs. This event with Dr. al-Hibri was an opportunity for members of the Charlottesville community to learn about Shari’ah directly from a Muslim scholar.

The lecture was part of KARAMAH’s efforts to educate the public about “Islam, Shari’ah, and Religious Freedom in the U.S.”. During the event, Dr. al-Hibri explained what Islamic law is, and how it is practiced in the U.S., and noted that it is consistent with American constitutional values. She also referred to the anti-Shari’ah laws and noted their unconstitutionality. The evening was attended by about 150 guests many of whom had questions during and after the lecture.
