Ms. Kunkle of El-Hibri Foundation Shares What She Wishes Grantseekers Would Know and Do

On August 5th, 2015, Lynn Kunkle, Director of Grants and Peace Education at the El-Hibri Foundation talked to LLSP 2015 participants about methods of effective fundraising and grant-writing. Recognizing how overwhelming grant-writing and fundraising can seem, Ms. Kunkle sought to “de-mystify the grant-making process” so participants could be more effective fundraisers for their organizations and causes in the future. She provided students with key factors to consider when seeking grants to fund specific projects or activities: 1. When donors are looking at your proposals they are all looking forward to saying no. It’s just easier. 2. Read eligibility criteria carefully before applying for a grant because as marvelous as your proposals are, I won’t take the time to read them unless they meet the criteria. I have to stick to the eligibility criteria. 3. Think through the implications of your proposal for the donors. Know your donors and how you will advance their interests. 4. Stay true to your core competencies and don’t overstretch yourself 5. Spell check! Because a sloppy proposal makes me move to the next one. Ms. Kunkle emphasized the importance of elevator pitches, and more generally, of always being prepared to make connections and find a “champion” for your cause. At the end of Ms. Kunkle’s presentation, one student remarked: “I really appreciate your approach and presentation style…I’ve seen grant presentations before, but this was very approachable, and your approach was very accessible.”
