In October 12, 2010, Dr. Azizah al-Hibri addressed the Muslim European community of Belgium at the Promotiezaal at Grauwzeusters (University of Antwerp, Antwerpen), speaking on her article, “An Introduction to Muslim Women’s Rights.” Dr. al-Hibri re-examined traditional Islamic jurisprudence from a Muslim woman’s perspective, and provided commentary on how to overcome the challenges that European Muslim women face. This was the first conference organized by the Karamah-EU Steering Committee.
The conference also highlighted the Karamah-EU leadership and provided insight into Karamah’s goals in Europe, which include hosting educational programs for the next generation of Muslim women leaders throughout Europe. Over the past year, Karamah has conducted a variety of workshops and programs for women addressing the most challenging issues European Muslims encounter. Through the Karamah-EU Steering Committee, we hope to enable European Muslim women to learn about the Islamic principles of equity, pluralism, and tolerance, and to develop adequate leadership skills to calm rising tensions between European Muslims and Non-Muslims.
